Auction Questions

[toggle title=”Can I use my credit card to pay for storage unit purchases?” open=”false” icon=”star”]At most locations, storage auctions are conducted on a CASH ONLY basis. However there are some storage facilities who do accept credit card payment for storage unit purchases. At JMA, we list the exceptions to cash purchases on our web site listing for each auction. Payment of the Buyer’s Premium is always required in cash unless prior arrangements have been made with the auctioneer.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”Do I have to pay a fee to attend an Auction?” open=”false” icon=”star”]No! You will never be asked to pay a fee to attend a JMA Auction.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”Do I need a Driver’s License or other form of identification?” open=”false” icon=”star”]Yes. You will need to provide a copy of your driver’s license either at registration, or when you pay for any purchases.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”Do storage facilities just auction off a person’s personal property as soon as they miss a month’s rent?” open=”false” icon=”star”]Absolutely not! Each state has specific laws regarding Storage Lien Sales! While those laws vary from state to state, in general, there is a long series of steps which must be followed by storage facilities before they can auction off personal property to satisfy a delinquent debt. These requirements include the amount of time a renter is in arrears, general mail notice of delinquency, certified mail notification, notification in local newspaper legal sections of intent to auction the personal property, phone notifications, and more. Even after all appropriate notifications, the renter has until the actual time of the auction to satisfy his/her debt to the storage facility and stop the auction sale.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”How much time are auction buyers allowed to look at the contents of a locker being auctioned?” open=”false” icon=”star”]As a general rule about 5 minutes or so, however, storage auctions are very popular and often there are dozens, sometimes hundreds of prospective buyers at the auction site and often it takes considerably longer for everyone to get an adequate look from the outside (no touching or going inside) of the storage unit.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”Do storage facility employees or auctioneers go into units before auctions and take valuable items?” open=”false” icon=”star”]No. Remember these are lien auctions. The possessions of the tenant are being sold at auction to pay delinquent storage fees that have gone unpaid. The property inside still belongs to the tenant until the auctioneer shouts SOLD to the highest bidder. When you are that high bidder, and make full payment, you are then the owner of record, and the only person to have touched the contents since they were placed there by the original tenant.[/toggle]

[toggle title=”Is a deposit required when I sign in?” open=”false” icon=”star”]No. However, you will be required to post a refundable clean-out deposit when a unit is purchased, to be returned when the storage facility manager confirms that the unit is clean and empty.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”Sometimes I see locks being cut on TV and sometimes I don’t. Are locks always cut the day of the auction?” open=”false” icon=”star”]Not always. There is no requirement to cut locks on the day of the auction. Some storage facilities prefer to cut locks ahead of time to speed up the auction process. It is required that a visual inventory is recorded and in most cases a picture is taken of what can be seen in the storage unit, WITHOUT GOING INSIDE![/toggle]
[toggle title=”Will I receive a bidder number for the auction?” open=”false” icon=”star”]No not for live auctions. You will be required to fill out a buyer registration form with your complete personal information. When you sign up for online auctions you will receive a bidder number.[/toggle]
